Olympic Ring Of Montjuïc, Memories Of 1992

Barcelona became the sports capital for international media for a few days when it held the 1992 Olympic Games and the central point was the Olympic Ring of Montjuïc; 400 historical hectares that are still a popular attraction today.

The 136-metre steel communications tower stands out, along with the imposing presence of the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium and the Palau Sant Jordi. Its shape is similar to an athlete’s body and its base is covered with mosaic, in clear reference to one of Gaudí signature constructive elements. In addition, the tower’s position enables it to also be a sundial when projecting the shadow of its central spire on the neighbouring Plaça d’Europa.

The facilities are currently being used to host sports and cultural events. The Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium is the main stage for multitudinous pop rock music events, and the Palau Sant Jordi, in addition to hosting musical events, is used for conventions and conferences.

The Bernat Picornell Swimming Pools are also in the Olympic Ring. They are a set of three swimming pools that were refurbished for the Olympic Games.
